上星期，中國異見份子胡佳獲歐洲議會頒發人權獎。北京政府曾在較早時警告歐洲議會，說這個決定將會嚴重損害中國與這個25國集團的關係。立法會議員說中國施加壓力是適得其反了。Lawmakers said Chinese pressure had been counterproductive。當本地一家銀行被謠傳擠提時，一家電視台在採訪時不讓觀眾看見那些正在該銀行分行外排隊的存戶，這其實是適得其反的。It was counter-productive for a local TV station to keep from viewers footage of crowds outside BEA branches,as withholding such footage just left them guessing at what has happened。Counterproductive是「適得其反、起反作用」的意思。它是形容詞，其他例子：It knows over-reaction would itself be a news story and counterproductive是「它知道反應過於強烈將會成為新聞故事，而且會起反作用」。
